Indian Scientists Develop Super-Fast Charging Sodium-Ion Battery

Led by Professor Premkumar Senguttuvan and PhD scholar Biplab Patra, they developed a NASICON-type cathode and engineered a special anode material, Na₁.₀V₀.₂₅Al₀.₂₅Nb₁.₅(PO₄)₃. This material underwent three major optimizations:

1. Shrinking particles to a nanoscale for faster ion movement.
2. Coating particles with carbon to improve safety and efficiency.
3. Adding aluminum to enhance anode performance.

Performance and Applications

These innovations enabled sodium-ion batteries to combine speedy charging with durability. Apart from charging up to 80% in minutes, the batteries endure over 3,000 charge cycles without significant wear and tear. Such features ensure wide usability, powering Electric Vehicles, solar grids, drones, and even rural homes.

Safety and Efficiency

Safety remains a vital consideration for these batteries. Testing methods like electrochemical cycling and quantum simulations have confirmed their reliability against overheating and fire hazards, common in traditional Lithium-ion systems.
