CATL to Begin Mass Production of Naxtra Sodium-Ion EV Batteries by 2025

Naxtra sodium-ion EV batteries are set to reshape the electric vehicle industry. Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has confirmed it will commence mass production of its innovative Naxtra sodium-ion EV battery packs by the end of 2025.

Why Sodium-Ion Batteries?

Sodium-ion technology is becoming a game-changer. Sodium is more abundant and cost-effective than lithium, cobalt, or nickel. These materials are commonly used in traditional batteries but come with higher costs and environmental concerns. CATL’s Chief Technology Officer for EV Business, Gao Huan, emphasized this shift during a recent announcement.

Sodium-ion Battery technology is no longer confined to laboratories,” said Gao. “We’ve made breakthroughs in energy density, cost-efficiency, and environmental sustainability, paving the way for mass adoption.”

Key Specifications of Naxtra Batteries

CATL revealed impressive specifications for its Naxtra sodium-ion EV batteries. The batteries deliver specific energy of 175 Wh/kg. This is comparable to the 185 Wh/kg achieved by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries commonly used in Chinese EVs.

The Naxtra series includes two prominent products:

1. Naxtra Passenger EV Battery

– Offers a range of up to 500 kilometers.
– Exhibits exceptional longevity with over 10,000 charge-discharge cycles.
– Performs reliably across temperatures ranging from -40° C to +70° C.

2. Naxtra Heavy-Duty Truck Start-Stop Battery

– Designed specifically for 24V heavy-duty applications.
– Equipped to handle challenging environmental conditions.
– Ideal for commercial use cases requiring robust performance.

A Growing Adoption of Sodium-Ion Technology

CATL first unveiled its Sodium-ion Battery technology in 2021. By 2023, Chery Automobile became the initial customer to implement this technology in its EV lineup. This adoption signals growing confidence in sodium-ion batteries, highlighting their potential to address performance and sustainability challenges.

Environmental Benefits

Unlike lithium-based batteries, sodium-ion technology minimizes reliance on scarce materials. Reducing environmental impact is a crucial objective in the EV market. CATL’s sodium-ion batteries align well with global efforts to advance cleaner and affordable energy solutions.

Looking Ahead to 2025

CATL‘s timeline reinforces the industry’s momentum toward sodium-based EV energy storage. With mass production set to launch by the end of 2025, Naxtra sodium-ion EV batteries will likely play a pivotal role in the growing adoption of more sustainable EV technologies.

This milestone positions CATL as a leader in sodium-ion innovation, with significant implications for the global EV market and the broader decarbonization initiative. As industry dynamics favor cost-effective, eco-friendly alternatives, sodium-ion technology may define the future of battery power.
