China’s CATL Launches Game-Changing Sodium-Ion Battery Lineup

China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) recently unveiled a groundbreaking lineup of sodium-ion batteries under the brand name Naxtra. This innovation also includes an upgraded second-generation Shenxing fast-charging electric vehicle (EV) battery. According to the company, mass production of the new Naxtra sodium-ion batteries will begin in December 2025.

Why Sodium-Ion Batteries Are a Big Deal

Sodium-ion batteries represent a significant leap in EV battery technology. Unlike traditional Lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries utilize sodium ions to store and transfer energy. Sodium is more abundant and widely available than lithium, making these batteries cheaper to produce. Additionally, they offer enhanced safety as they are less prone to combustion risks compared to their Lithium-ion counterparts.

While sodium-ion batteries have a lower energy density than Lithium-ion alternatives, they are perfectly suited for applications like budget-friendly cars, short-range EVs, and energy grid storage systems. In fact, the first Naxtra battery boasts an energy density of 175 watt-hours per kilogram, comparable to that of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries used in current electric cars and grid systems.

Key Figures Behind CATL’s New Battery Innovation

CATL’s co-president of research and development, Ouyang Chuying, stated that as the supply chain for sodium-ion batteries matures, their cost advantages will become even more apparent. This innovation could pave the way for affordable Electric Vehicles, particularly for urban commuters with short daily travel distances. CATL’s founder, Robin Zeng, highlighted that sodium-ion batteries could replace up to 50% of the LFP battery market, which is currently led by CATL.

CATL’s Shenxing Fast-Charging Battery

Complementing the Naxtra series is CATL’s second-generation Shenxing fast-charging battery. It offers remarkable performance, providing up to 323 miles of range after just five minutes of charging. Even in cold weather, it can charge from 0–80% in just 15 minutes, showcasing its efficiency and resilience. Starting in 2025, 67 EV models will feature this advanced technology, reinforcing CATL’s leadership in battery innovation.

Accelerating the Shift to Green Transportation

CATL’s advancements signify a major stride toward more sustainable and accessible transportation. By developing efficient and cost-effective alternatives to traditional Lithium-ion batteries, CATL is not only making EVs more affordable but also addressing safety concerns tied to battery technology. These innovations will likely encourage other industry players to invest in similar research to improve EV performance, affordability, and adoption rates globally.

As nations worldwide push for a transition to clean energy and transportation, the introduction of sodium-ion and enhanced fast-charging batteries could accelerate the adoption of Electric Vehicles. CATL’s leadership in these technologies serves as a testament to what’s achievable in the evolving EV landscape.
