CATL Unveils 310-Mile Sodium Battery to Rival Lithium in EVs

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), a global leader in electric vehicle battery production, has revealed its revolutionary Sodium-ion Battery. Marking a significant milestone, this cutting-edge innovation aims to compete with existing Lithium-ion technology, promising enhanced safety and a competitive driving range of 310 miles.

Sodium-Ion Batteries Under CATL’s New Brand

CATL plans to launch its sodium-ion batteries under the brand Naxtra. Production is scheduled to begin in June, with the company aiming for mass production by December 2025. At a press conference in Shanghai, Luo Jian, the company’s chief marketing officer, confirmed the batteries’ readiness for deployment in both hybrid and fully electric passenger vehicles later this year.

Enhanced Safety Features

Sodium-ion technology stands out for its safety benefits. Unlike Lithium-ion batteries, which pose fire hazards when damaged, sodium-ion batteries offer stable energy storage solutions. This makes them an appealing alternative, particularly in regions with strict safety regulations.

Additionally, CATL’s new sodium-ion batteries perform exceptionally in cold weather. This improvement addresses a long-standing challenge in the EV battery market—sluggishness or failure under low-temperature conditions. With enhanced cold-weather resilience, Naxtra batteries could become a preferred option for colder climates.

Impressive Energy Density and Driving Range

SCMP reports that these sodium-ion batteries have an energy density of 175 Wh/kg. While slightly lower than the 185 Wh/kg density of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, the difference remains minimal. The Naxtra batteries are expected to enable Electric Vehicles to achieve a driving range of up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) on a single charge, making them highly competitive in the EV market.

Planned Applications and Deployment

As reported by AFP, the initial units of Naxtra sodium-ion batteries will cater to heavy-duty vehicle starter systems. By December, larger battery versions will become available for mass-market use in passenger cars, including hybrids. CATL’s strategic focus on both light and heavy-duty vehicles ensures that its new sodium-ion batteries will serve a diverse range of automotive segments.

Market Impact

CATL’s innovative sodium-ion technology could redefine the EV market. Robin Zeng, CATL’s CEO, predicts that these batteries will eventually replace half of the lithium iron phosphate batteries currently in use. Their benefits in performance and safety could lead to widespread adoption, boosting consumer confidence in alternative battery technologies.

With CATL’s batteries already integrated into 18.32 million vehicles in over 66 countries, this new offering continues the company’s dedication to cutting-edge energy solutions. CATL is also leveraging partnerships with major automakers such as Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and BMW to expand market reach.

Advancing EV Infrastructure

CATL’s advancements stretch beyond battery production. The company is investing heavily in battery-swapping technologies to reduce recharging times for Electric Vehicles. Initiatives like Nio’s swappable battery technology showcase the potential for smoother and faster EV adoption.

The second generation of CATL’s Shenxing batteries was also unveiled recently. With an impressive 800-kilometer driving range, Shenxing batteries will be incorporated into 67 vehicles from Chinese automakers like Zeekr, Nio, and Avatr. Such progress demonstrates CATL’s commitment to addressing consumer concerns such as range anxiety, further solidifying its leadership in EV battery innovation.

In summary, CATL‘s Sodium-ion Battery technology has the potential to reshape the electric vehicle industry. By prioritizing safety, efficiency, and cold-weather resilience, these batteries pave the way for a new era of sustainable transportation solutions.
