Additionally, sodium processing requires lower temperatures compared to lithium, which reduces production costs and the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing. Transforming Solar Power Plants

Moonwatt’s Sodium-ion Battery systems are specifically designed for co-location with solar power plants. This setup aims to replace polluting energy sources entirely, while also improving grid reliability. Sodium-ion systems address the challenge of intermittency in renewable energy by ensuring a steady power supply. As a result, solar power plants using Moonwatt’s technology can increase their capacity factor to up to 80%. This leap in efficiency boosts profitability and reduces operational costs.

The co-location design is set to lower electricity prices for consumers while enhancing renewable energy’s appeal over traditional fuels. Moonwatt’s co-founder and chief commercial officer, Valentin Rota, explained, “We realized that this application — solar storage — is the backbone of the future world power grid, but there is no product dedicated to it yet. So that’s what Moonwatt is about: It’s about making the first solar-dedicated battery storage product.”

Backing From Industry Veterans

Moonwatt’s leadership team — CEO Zukui Hu, CTO Guillaume Mancini, and Rota — have a decade-long history of working on battery technologies at Tesla, followed by collaborations on other clean energy projects. Their expertise and vision have driven the creation of Moonwatt, focusing on solving key issues in renewable energy storage.

The company’s mission goes beyond profitability. “We very much nurture an ambition to be a gigawatt-hour player, a large-scale player because we want to make an impact,” Rota shared. Moonwatt extends this vision by aiming to decarbonize the power sector, which accounts for 40% of global carbon emissions. Their sodium-ion systems offer an effective solution for transitioning grids to clean energy.

A Rapidly Growing Startup

Founded in 2024, Moonwatt is already making waves. The company has secured $8.3 million in seed funding to accelerate production of its groundbreaking sodium-ion systems. Plans for a pilot installation are set for Europe in 2026, with deployment at large-scale solar plants expected in 2027.
