Hybrid Lithium-Sodium-Ion Battery Storage System Goes Online in China

A hybrid battery energy storage system (BESS) combining Lithium-ion and sodium-ion technology with a capacity of 200MW/400MWh is now fully operational in Qiubei County, Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. The project, provided by HiNa Battery, achieved full grid-connected operation as of April 1, 2025.

World’s First Hybrid Lithium-Sodium-Ion BESS

The hybrid system is notable for its integration of Lithium-ion and sodium-ion technologies. Sodium-ion batteries are gaining attention for their potential cost advantages and reduced dependency on scarce raw materials. However, the Lithium-ion component provides the proven performance needed to meet grid stabilization and renewable energy integration demands.

This large-scale BESS demonstrates how hybrid solutions can enhance energy storage capacity and flexibility. By utilizing sodium-ion batteries for specific applications while relying on Lithium-ion for high-performance needs, the system optimizes both cost and efficiency.

Specifications and Performance

The 200MW/400MWh energy storage system highlights the scalability of hybrid battery technology. The combination of high energy density in Lithium-ion batteries with the emerging potential of sodium-ion offers a balanced solution for large-scale storage projects. This project aims to stabilize the local power grid, integrate renewable energy, and ensure energy availability during peak demand.

The dual-chemistry approach also supports grid balance by facilitating efficient charge-discharge cycles. This makes it ideal for supporting intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind power. HiNa Battery’s advanced design ensures the system meets long-term performance goals while maintaining economic feasibility.

A Milestone for Energy Storage in China

China has established itself as a global leader in energy storage innovation, and this project further underscores its commitment to clean energy solutions. The successful deployment of the hybrid lithium-sodium-ion BESS sets a precedent for future projects worldwide. The utilization of both battery chemistries reflects a forward-thinking approach that leverages the strengths of each technology to deliver reliable energy storage at scale.

These advancements align with China’s renewable energy goals, which include expanding energy storage capacity to support its transition away from fossil fuels. The project’s location in Yunnan Province is particularly important. The region is a hub for hydropower and other renewable energy sources, making it an ideal site to test and implement hybrid storage solutions.

Future Prospects for Hybrid Systems

The success of this system in Yunnan Province could pave the way for additional hybrid installations across the globe. Sodium-ion technology, while still in its early stages, shows promise as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly complement to Lithium-ion solutions. As research and development continue, these hybrid systems may become increasingly common in the energy storage landscape.

The Qiubei County project raises optimism for achieving greater energy independence and resilience by integrating advanced storage solutions. With HiNa Battery at the forefront, this hybrid BESS demonstrates how combining different technologies can address both economic and sustainability challenges in the modern energy sector.

This milestone serves as a blueprint for further innovations in energy storage, highlighting the potential of hybrid systems in meeting global energy demands effectively and efficiently.
