Clarios Fuels Innovation in Sodium-Ion Battery Development

Clarios takes a significant step in battery innovation by investing in Altris, a Swedish company focused on Sodium-ion Battery development. The collaboration between Clarios and Altris aims to accelerate the development and commercialisation of low voltage Sodium-ion Battery systems for automotive applications by 2026.

Focus on Sodium-Ion Technology

The partnership highlights Clarios’s dedication to expanding its battery portfolio. Sodium-ion batteries offer a promising alternative to traditional Lithium-ion and lead-acid options. With Altris leading the charge in developing sodium-ion cells, Clarios will contribute advanced electrical modelling software and battery management systems expertise.

Commercialisation Plans

Both companies have set a target to bring these batteries to market by 2026. Altris will focus on creating patented cathode material called Altris Prussian White. They will also work on electrolytes, battery cells, and comprehensive production blueprints. Clarios will assist with the integration and performance of these systems into vehicles.

Investment Details

Clarios’s investment will enable Altris to finalise their battery technology and initiate pilot production. Once perfected, the move towards commercial production is planned, aiming at a market release in 2026. Although financial details remain undisclosed, Altris successfully secured Skr150 million, approximately $14 million, in a Series B1 funding round. This injection introduces new investors, including Clarios and Maersk Growth.

Impact on Automotive Industry

With increasing demand for sustainable and efficient energy solutions in vehicles, sodium-ion batteries play a vital role. Notably, Clarios’s low-voltage battery architecture supports critical safety features and redundancy in electrical systems. It ensures these batteries meet the growing power demands of modern vehicles.

Federico Morales-Zimmermann, Clarios’s vice president, stated that Sodium-ion Battery solutions complement their diverse portfolio. They seamlessly integrate with existing Lithium-ion and lead-acid technologies to deliver high performance at a lower cost.

In summary, by investing in Altris, Clarios strengthens its commitment to pioneering cleaner, cost-efficient battery solutions. Their venture into Sodium-ion Battery technology underscores a shift towards sustainable energy, promising advancements in automotive power solutions.
