Natron Energy is making a significant investment in North Carolina with its $1.4 billion factory for sodium-ion batteries. The factory, located in Edgecombe County, is planned to have a massive 24 GW annual production capacity. This will vastly enhance Natron Energy’s output, multiplying its current capacity by a factor of 40.
Natron’s innovative batteries are the only UL-listed sodium-ion batteries currently available. They are versatile, serving various sectors like industrial power, data centers, EV fast charging, and telecom. Notably, these batteries offer zero strain during charging and discharge. They cycle 10 times faster than traditional Lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, they boast more than 50,000 cycles and are free of hard-to-acquire minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel.
Sodium-Ion Technology
Natron Energy utilizes patented ‘Prussian blue electrodes’. These electrodes allow for quick and efficient sodium-ion transfer with lower internal resistance. As a result, the batteries outperform other commercial options.
Economic Impact
The project is anticipated to create over 1,000 full-time jobs. The factory spans a vast 1.2 million square feet on a 437-acre plot in Kingsboro. North Carolina supports the initiative with more than $50 million in grants.
Strategic Location and Growth
Natron Energy selected North Carolina after evaluating 70 sites across nine states. Colin Wessells, co-chief executive officer, emphasized North Carolina’s role in the clean energy revolution, stating the state is an ideal partner for this impactful project.
Additionally, a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) facilitates the project. Over a 12-year term, the initiative could boost North Carolina’s economy by an estimated $3.4 billion. The new North Carolina Megasite Readiness Program is also expected to play a part, with Edgecombe County potentially applying for a $30 million grant.
