Sodium-Ion Growth: US and China Boost Production

Sodium-ion technology is gaining momentum as the United States and China set the stage for expanded production. Leading the charge, US-based Natron Energy plans a significant sodium-ion gigafactory in North Carolina.

US Sodium-Ion Gigafactory Plans

Natron Energy, located in California, announced the construction of a sodium-ion gigafactory in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. This ambitious facility is projected to have a capacity of 24GWh annually. The company has allocated US$1.4 billion for its development.

This venture in North Carolina marks Natron’s second major production after earlier this year’s commercial launch of a 600MWh factory in Michigan. Natron aims to meet the increasing demand for critical power, industrial, and grid energy storage solutions.

Support from the state’s Economic Investment Committee provides a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG). This ensures local economic engagement. Additionally, Natron plans to apply for a US$30 million grant from the North Carolina Megasite Readiness Program.

Economic Incentives

The investment aligns with the benefits from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Natron stands to gain from 45x tax credits, offering US$35 per kWh for battery cell capacity and an additional US$10 per kWh for modules. Remarkably, Natron’s product is the only UL-certified Sodium-ion Battery available today.

China’s Leading Role in Sodium-Ion Production

On the other side of the globe, China is rapidly advancing in sodium-ion technology with plans already in motion. Zhejiang Hu Na Energy has successfully registered for an operational annual production of 4GWh of Sodium-ion Battery cells and modules.

Located in Nanhu, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, Hu Na Energy’s facility is expected to reach 20GWh of capacity. The initial 4GWh phase required an investment of CNY1.125 billion (approximately US$157 million), primarily allocated to equipment costs.

Further east, Harbin Bona New Energy is commencing a new build. The company is set to construct a 2GWh Sodium-ion Battery production plant in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province by the end of this month.

China’s Rapid Progress

Both these Chinese companies are contributing significantly to global production goals. Their advancements play a crucial role in setting the foundation for future energy storage systems.

Together, these developments in the US and China represent a significant leap forward in the energy storage landscape. The ongoing expansion in Sodium-ion Battery production showcases a promising future for sustainable energy solutions.

As sodium-ion technology continues to progress, its benefits of low cost, long lifespan, high safety, and energy density cannot be overlooked. This renewed focus is crucial as the world seeks sustainable energy solutions.
