Sineng Electric is at the forefront of innovation in the energy storage sector. The company has been selected to provide its string PCS MV turnkey stations for the world’s largest Sodium-ion Battery energy storage system (BESS). This landmark project in Hubei Province, China, consists of an initial phase of 50MW/100MWh which has successfully started commercial operations. This phase marks China’s first 100-MWh-scale energy storage power station using sodium-ion batteries.
Sodium-ion Battery Energy Storage System
Developed by Datang Hubei Energy Development, the 50MW/100MWh project stores 100,000 kWh of electricity in a single charge. This capacity can power about 12,000 households for an entire day.
Why Sodium-Ion Batteries?
China is seeking to diversify its energy storage technologies beyond lithium. Sodium-ion batteries offer several advantages. They are made from abundant raw materials and perform better at low temperatures. Additionally, they have superior round trip efficiency and excellent safety features.
Technical Specifications
The power plant includes 42 BESS containers equipped with 185Ah sodium-ion batteries, 21 power conversion system (PCS) units, and a 110kV booster station. Sineng’s 2.5MW string PCS MV turnkey solution is designed to handle a wide DC voltage range, from 700V to 1500V, supporting rated output power. The solution also features cluster-level energy management, enhancing sodium-ion batteries’ cluster-level balancing capability. Furthermore, the string PCS units have an IP66 protection rating, ensuring durability in extreme temperatures and high humidity.
Impact and Future Prospects
As the project enters commercial operation, it plays a critical role in mitigating peak demand and boosting grid resilience. It also ensures a reliable power supply. This initiative is a significant milestone in China’s journey toward adopting diverse energy storage solutions. The large-scale deployment of Sodium-ion Battery technology demonstrates its feasibility and benefits. This project sets the stage for global adoption and illustrates Sineng’s pioneering role in the energy storage industry. The company continuously strives to innovate and deliver top-tier solutions that meet the evolving requirements of the global energy landscape.
