TaiSan Raises £1.3m to Boost Quasi-Solid-State Sodium Batteries

TaiSan, a UK-based company, is propelling the development of quasi-solid-state sodium batteries for the global automotive industry. With recent funding of £1.3 million, TaiSan aims to expedite the advancement of its battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology.

Funding and Investors

Led by EIT InnoEnergy and TSP Ventures, and followed by Heartfelt VC and Exergon, TaiSan’s pre-seed round is supported by Europe’s strategic e-mobility funds. EIT InnoEnergy, co-funded by the EU, has investment ties with leading automotive OEMs and gigafactories. Heartfelt VC also has connections to a prominent automotive OEM.

Adoption and Market Potential

The adoption of sodium-ion chemistry is expected to be a significant shift in the BEV industry. This technology offers cost, sustainability, and safety benefits compared to Lithium-ion batteries. The global market is projected to grow to £1 billion by 2028, with a capacity of 186GWh/year by 2032. TaiSan has already signed 12 MoUs with automakers worldwide for collaborative R&D.

Innovative Technology

Founded in 2022, TaiSan aims to revolutionize energy density in sodium batteries for BEVs. The company has developed a proprietary polymer electrolyte with a metal anode, using sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. This innovation results in cells with comparable energy density to Lithium-ion cells but at a projected 20% cost saving.

Benefits and Advantages

TaiSan’s technology offers ionic conductivity for fast-charging and high mechanical strength to withstand dendrite growth. With no leakage, there is no risk of fire. Designed as a drop-in solution for existing Lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities, TaiSan’s innovation is cost-effective and scalable for mass production.

Recent and Future Developments

Over the last two years, TaiSan has received close to £500,000 in funding from various UK Government and Research organizations. This includes support from the Department for Transport, The Faraday Institution, Innovate UK, and others. In October 2023, TaiSan was awarded “Best Growth Potential” by Professor Sarah Sharples, Chief Scientific Advisor to the DfT.

Founder Sanzhar Taizhan, a former JLR battery engineer, has received multiple UK battery awards. He was also recognized by Forbes Kazakhstan in their 30 under 30 list after leading successful projects at Hyperloop contests.
