Remplir Builds Korea’s First Prismatic Sodium-Ion

Moreover, the company has already started customer qualification for the new cell. Prismatic sodium-ion battery marks a first for South Korea

Remplir developed a 170Ah prismatic sodium-ion battery in June 2026. As a result, the company became the first in South Korea to build this battery format domestically. Sodium-ion batteries replace lithium with sodium, which supports cost efficiency through the use of abundant materials. In addition, this chemistry fits well with stationary storage needs because it offers long cycle life and dependable low-temperature performance.

The company now stands out as the only South Korean manufacturer producing both prismatic LFP batteries and prismatic sodium-ion batteries. Meanwhile, even the country’s three largest battery makers do not produce prismatic sodium-ion batteries domestically. How Remplir designed its prismatic sodium-ion battery

Remplir built prototype cells at its Hwaseong facility in Gyeonggi Province. Then it began performance evaluations with overseas customers. The company is mainly targeting energy storage systems, or ESS, and uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, markets. These sectors value durability, safety, and stable operation across varied temperatures.

The prismatic sodium-ion battery uses a sodium iron phosphate, or NFPP, cathode. This material choice gives Remplir a clear cost advantage. Iron, phosphorus, and sodium are relatively abundant raw materials. Therefore, the battery avoids nickel and cobalt while supporting lower material costs. At the same time, the chemistry delivers long cycle life and strong safety characteristics because its structure changes very little during charging and discharging.

Remplir also improved the battery through its own materials formulation. In addition, the company designed the cell to operate from minus 40 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius. That wide operating range makes the battery attractive for storage applications that face harsh climates. Prismatic sodium-ion battery production uses existing lines

One of Remplir’s biggest advantages is manufacturing flexibility. The company can produce sodium-ion batteries without building a completely separate line. Instead, it uses its existing prismatic LFP production facilities. Most battery manufacturing steps remain the same because sodium-ion cells share many processes with Lithium-ion batteries. Only the mixing process needs adjustment when teams blend electrode materials.

This setup can help Remplir move faster toward commercialization. It also supports better capital efficiency because the company can leverage equipment it already operates. According to Remplir, its know-how in material composition and formulation creates a strong edge. Remplir’s commercialization plan for prismatic sodium-ion battery

Chief Executive Kim Su-jin said sodium-ion batteries remain in an early commercialization phase. However, that timing creates room to build a fresh supply chain. After customer qualification with North American customers, Remplir plans to commercialize ESS products and broaden its portfolio. This strategy aligns with rising demand for localized battery sourcing and diversified cell chemistries.

Remplir currently runs a 100MWh production line at its Hwaseong plant. The site has annual capacity of about 150,000 battery cells. Furthermore, the company is seeking to raise 100 billion won in a Series B round. It plans to use the funds to expand capacity to the gigawatt-hour level, increase manufacturing space, and support research and development.

The new production lines will mainly produce prismatic LFP batteries. Still, part of the capacity will support drone batteries. Alongside that expansion, Remplir continues to strengthen its position in prismatic battery markets with tailored cell designs. The company already supplies 340Ah cells for ESS and 230Ah cells for heavy equipment and agricultural machinery.

Why Remplir’s prismatic sodium-ion battery matters in 2026

Remplir’s new battery arrives as industrial electrification accelerates. Construction equipment, agricultural machinery, forklifts, and golf carts are steadily moving from diesel engines and lead-acid batteries toward lithium-based systems. He also said demand for South Korean alternatives to Chinese products continues to rise. Based on that momentum, Remplir expects revenue to exceed 12 billion won in 2026, which would be more than ten times last year’s level.
