Sodium-ion Battery materials package is moving to the center of South Korea’s next battery push. EcoPro BM, Soulbrain, and Aekyung Chemical have formed the K-Sodium Alliance to jointly develop core materials for sodium-ion batteries. Together, they will combine cathode materials, electrolyte, and hard carbon anode material into one integrated package. Then, they plan to supply that package to battery makers and automakers.
EcoPro BM announced the alliance on July 26, 2026. The company said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Soulbrain and Aekyung Chemical on July 22 at its headquarters in Ochang, North Chungcheong Province. As a result, the three companies will now coordinate research, testing, and production plans under one framework.
Sodium-ion battery materials package supports joint development
The alliance focuses on building an optimized mix of materials for sodium-ion batteries. First, EcoPro BM will lead cathode material development. In addition, the company will work on mass-production technology. Next, Soulbrain will develop electrolyte and related additives. Meanwhile, Aekyung Chemical will handle hard carbon anode material development and mass-production technology.
This structure matters because battery performance depends on more than one material alone. Instead, the interaction between cathode materials, electrolyte, and anode material shapes battery life, output, and charging performance. Therefore, the three companies will exchange the materials they develop and share evaluation data. That process should help them identify the best-performing combinations faster and with better consistency.
Sodium-ion battery materials package strengthens supply chain
The alliance also aims to create a more complete domestic supply chain for sodium-ion batteries in South Korea. At present, the country does not yet have a fully linked ecosystem that covers cathode materials, electrolyte, and anode material for this battery segment. By joining forces, the companies can align development from the start. As a result, they can improve compatibility across materials and speed up commercialization.
Sodium-ion batteries use sodium instead of lithium as a key raw material. Because sodium is easier to procure, companies can secure materials more efficiently. In addition, sodium-based systems offer lower exposure to raw material price swings than Lithium-ion batteries. They also deliver solid low-temperature performance and strong safety characteristics. For that reason, the technology is drawing attention for energy storage systems and entry-level Electric Vehicles.
Sodium-ion battery materials package gains production scale
Each partner brings a clear role and a measurable asset to the alliance. EcoPro BM has developed sodium-ion battery cathode materials over the past four years. It already operates a pilot production line with annual capacity of 1,000 tons. That pilot line gives the company a base for process refinement, product verification, and future scale-up.
Aekyung Chemical is also expanding its readiness. The company is building a pilot line for hard carbon anode material with annual capacity of 1,300 tons. It aims to complete that line within 2026. Once ready, the pilot facility should support material validation and manufacturing optimization for the broader alliance.
Soulbrain adds electrolyte expertise to the partnership. Electrolyte and additives play a central role in battery stability and performance. Therefore, Soulbrain’s work will complement the cathode and anode efforts from the other two companies. When combined, the three areas can create a more balanced and application-ready materials package.
Sodium-ion battery materials package targets ESS and EV use
The partners are positioning this materials package for battery makers and automakers. In particular, sodium-ion batteries fit applications that value safety, stable performance, and cost efficiency. Energy storage systems stand out as a key target. Entry-level electric vehicles also represent an important market. Accordingly, an integrated materials package could help customers shorten development timelines and reduce testing complexity.
The alliance model may also improve product consistency. When companies develop materials separately, battery makers often need to spend more time matching components. However, a coordinated package can simplify that process. It can also provide verified compatibility data from the material stage. That gives battery customers a clearer starting point for cell design and validation.

The K-Sodium Alliance shows how South Korean materials companies are preparing for the next phase of battery growth. EcoPro BM, Soulbrain, and Aekyung Chemical are not working in isolation. Instead, they are linking research, pilot production, and evaluation from the beginning. That approach can improve efficiency and build a stronger base for commercial supply.
Jeong Hyun-soo, head of future technology at EcoPro BM, said sodium-ion batteries offer cost competitiveness and strong low-temperature performance. He added that private-sector technology cooperation can raise the competitiveness of the domestic industry. With pilot capacity already in place and more capacity coming this year, the alliance now has a practical foundation for progress in 2026.
