CATL Launches Commercial Sodium-Ion Battery Production

CATL, the world’s leading battery manufacturer, has officially begun the commercial production of sodium-ion batteries. CATL’s Sodium-ion Battery Features Exceptional Cold Weather Performance

Among the key advantages of sodium-ion batteries is their impressive performance in extreme cold temperatures. CATL reports that its Sodium-ion Battery packs maintain 90% of their usable capacity at -40°C. This makes them an excellent option for regions that experience harsh winters. Additionally, the batteries can be charged efficiently in temperatures as low as -30°C, ensuring reliability in cold conditions where other batteries often struggle.

The Techtrans II Platform

CATL‘s latest innovation is part of the Techtrans II platform. This system caters to light commercial vehicles with a Sodium-ion Battery pack capacity of 45 kWh. While it offers less energy density than Lithium-ion batteries, it focuses on durability and cost-effectiveness for shorter-range vehicles such as vans and small trucks. The sodium-ion batteries in this platform boast a lifespan of over 10,000 charge cycles, making them ideal for long-term applications, including commercial use.

The Techtrans II series also includes other battery types with advanced capabilities. For instance, a Lithium-ion variant offers ultra-fast charging from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes at -15°C. Another variant supports high-temperature operation, adding 60% charge in 18 minutes and lasting over 5,000 cycles at 45°C. Sodium-ion technology complements this ecosystem by providing cost-effective and durable solutions for specific use cases.

Scalability and Energy Storage Potential

Sodium-ion batteries are not limited to automotive applications. CATL foresees their large-scale adoption in energy storage solutions, including grid-scale systems. With a long lifespan of up to 30 years at 365 charge cycles per year, these batteries present a sustainable alternative for renewable energy storage. Increased Reliance on Sodium Over Lithium

The demand for lithium has led to volatile pricing in recent years. For example, lithium carbonate futures rose by 160% between November 2023 and December 2025. Sodium-ion batteries circumvent this issue, thanks to sodium’s ample availability and lower cost. CATL’s use of sodium thus helps to reduce dependence on lithium, creating a stable and affordable energy storage option.

Battery Swapping and Chinese National Standards

In addition to energy storage and automotive applications, CATL plans to introduce Sodium-ion Battery packs for swapping systems. Swappable battery packs under the Techtrans series, such as the #20 block with 42 kWh and the #25 block with 56 kWh, signify an important step toward mass adoption. By 2026, CATL predicts widespread use of sodium-ion batteries in passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, and energy storage systems. Furthermore, the new sodium-ion batteries comply with China’s GB 38031-2025 standards, ensuring safety and compatibility with next-generation requirements.
