CATL Unveils First Sodium-Ion Battery for Light Commercial Vehicles

CATL has introduced its first Sodium-ion Battery designed specifically for light commercial vehicles. The announcement marks a significant step forward in battery technology, targeting widespread adoption of sodium-ion solutions in 2026.

Innovative Sodium-ion Battery Features

This new Sodium-ion Battery is part of CATL’s Tectrans II series and is engineered to perform exceptionally well in extreme cold climates. According to CATL, the battery retains 90% of its usable capacity even at -40°C. Furthermore, it can be charged in environments as low as -30°C, showcasing its robust performance in harsh conditions.

The sodium battery pack offers a total capacity of 45 kWh, making it ideal for small vans and micro-trucks. Its development underlines CATL‘s commitment to enhancing commercial vehicle operations by providing reliable and efficient energy solutions.

Tectrans II Series: A Comprehensive Line-Up

The Sodium-ion Battery is part of the Tectrans II series, which includes various tailored options for different commercial transportation needs. In addition to the low-temperature sodium-ion variant, the series features ultra-fast charging solutions. One variant allows charging from 20% to 80% within 30 minutes at -15°C. A high-temperature ultra-fast charging version adds 60% range in just 18 minutes and boasts a cell life of up to 5,000 cycles at 45°C.

The Tectrans II series also offers a long-range version with a battery pack capacity of up to 253 kWh, enabling vehicles to achieve an impressive range of 800 kilometers. Additionally, battery-swap compatible packs are available, including options like the #20 block (42 kWh), #25 block (56 kWh), and #35 block (81 kWh), improving flexibility and operational efficiency for vehicle operators.

Sodium-ion Battery Adoption in 2026

CATL foresees 2026 as a pivotal year for Sodium-ion Battery adoption across various sectors. These include battery-swapping networks, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and energy storage systems. The company expects sodium-ion and Lithium-ion batteries to establish a “dual-star” trend within the battery industry, with each technology offering unique benefits.

This launch aligns with predictions made at CATL’s recent supplier conference in Ningde, Fujian. The company highlighted sodium-ion batteries as a key player in the evolving energy landscape, complementing the established dominance of Lithium-ion technology.

A Giant Leap for Light Commercial Vehicles

CATL’s Sodium-ion Battery represents a landmark innovation for light commercial vehicles. With its ability to perform reliably in extreme cold and charge efficiently, it offers an ideal solution for industries operating in challenging environments. Moreover, its design underscores CATL‘s focus on expanding sustainable energy solutions for diverse vehicle markets.

As part of the Tectrans II series, this battery not only enhances operational flexibility but also strengthens CATL‘s reputation as a global leader in battery technology. By addressing the evolving demands of the commercial vehicle sector, CATL is paving the way for the future of sustainable transportation.
