ARCI and Voltasun Technologies to Boost Sodium-Ion Battery Commercialisation

Sodium-ion Battery technology is taking a significant step forward thanks to the collaboration between the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) and Voltasun Technologies. This partnership aims to validate and commercialize indigenous Sodium-ion Battery pouch cells as a safer and cost-effective alternative to Lithium-ion batteries.

ARCI and Voltasun Technologies’ Collaboration

ARCI, operating under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Voltasun Technologies to take the Sodium-ion Battery technology from the lab to industrial-scale applications. Sodium-ion Battery pouch cells in this collaboration are based on Sodium Vanadium Phosphate (NVP) cathode material, developed by ARCI.

This technology is a promising solution for energy storage systems, Electric Vehicles, and portable electronics. Sodium-ion batteries offer a sustainable and economical option compared to Lithium-ion counterparts.

Key Phases of the Partnership

The collaboration will roll out in two phases:

Phase I: Initial Validation

ARCI will supply 80 sodium-ion pouch cells to Voltasun Technologies for performance validation. Feedback from these tests will drive further improvements in the technology.

Phase II: Expanded Validation

Following the initial results, ARCI will supply two additional sets of 80 cells each. These will be part of a separate amendment agreement for industrial validation.

Advanced Technology Behind Sodium-Ion Batteries

ARCI’s expertise in Sodium Vanadium Phosphate (NVP) cathode material is crucial to this project. This material has undergone rigorous testing at laboratory scales and has demonstrated excellent potential. Under the aegis of the ANRF MAHA EV project, ARCI successfully fabricated and tested NVP-based sodium-ion pouch cells. Field condition validations are currently underway.

Voltasun Technologies, a startup specializing in battery materials and cell manufacturing, brings its industrial expertise to the table. The company’s existing customer network will help evaluate and extend the application of this technology, particularly in stationary energy storage systems.

Impact on India’s Energy Initiatives

This collaboration aligns with India’s push towards self-reliance in advanced energy storage solutions. By promoting indigenous technologies like sodium-ion batteries, the partnership supports the development of safer, cost-effective, and scalable energy storage.

ARCI continues to pave the way for innovative solutions that bridge the gap between academic research and industrial applications. This collaboration underscores their efforts to promote sustainable energy technologies on a global scale.
