Sodium-Ion Battery Costs Could Drop to $40/kWh, Says IRENA

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative to Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), offering significant potential for cost reduction. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Sodium-ion Battery cells could achieve a cost of $40/kWh as production scales. Abundance and Cost Advantages of Sodium

Sodium carbonate, which serves as a key material for SIBs, has remained significantly cheaper than lithium carbonate. Between 2020 and 2024, sodium carbonate prices ranged from $100/tonne to $500/tonne. In contrast, lithium carbonate prices varied between $6,000/tonne and $83,000/tonne during the same time frame.

The Earth’s crust contains sodium in quantities approximately 1,000 times greater than lithium. In oceans, sodium is roughly 60,000 times more plentiful. This abundance could reduce supply chain pressures as demand for batteries continues to grow globally, especially in the electric vehicle sector.

Potential Cost Reductions and Affordable Materials

IRENA’s report emphasizes the cost-reduction potential of sodium-ion batteries. Manufacturers expect these batteries to utilize affordable materials compared to Lithium-ion batteries. For instance, SIBs employ cheaper cathode materials like manganese and iron. Additionally, aluminum current collectors replace the copper collectors used in LIBs, further reducing production costs.

SIBs also benefit from their early-stage development status. As the technology scales, economies of scale are expected to drive down production costs significantly. IRENA projects the production capacity of SIBs to reach 70 GWh by the end of 2025, largely concentrated in China and dominated by layered metal oxide cathode chemistries.
