Svolt Energy is making significant strides in battery technology by introducing its first-generation semi-solid-state batteries. These batteries are set for mass production and volume deliveries in 2026, according to Yang Hongxin, Svolt’s chairman and CEO. Yang shared these details during the 2025 World Power Battery Conference on November 12.
Semi-Solid-State Battery Development
Svolt Energy has finalized the development of square cells with a high energy density of 270 Wh/kg, ensuring efficient performance. The batteries will soon enter C-sample batch trial production, marking a vital step toward commercialization. Svolt has already secured orders for the product. A prominent European electric vehicle (EV) brand and a Chinese state-owned enterprise plan to use these batteries for eVTOL projects.
The company has invested in a specialized production line with a 2.3 GWh capacity to support manufacturing. Looking ahead, Svolt is developing second-generation semi-solid-state battery cells targeting an energy density of 400 Wh/kg. By 2028, the company aims to launch semi-solid-state pouch cells with an impressive energy density of 450 Wh/kg.
Addressing Thermal Stability in Battery Technology
Ternary lithium batteries are widely favored for high-end EVs. However, they account for nearly 70% of EV fires caused by thermal runaway. Svolt Energy has innovated with semi-solid-state technologies to mitigate this issue. Non-flammable and non-corrosive solid electrolytes improve safety while maintaining performance. Importantly, these advancements are achieved without increasing manufacturing costs.
Market Collaborations
Svolt’s collaboration extends to several industry players. For instance, trial production of semi-solid-state batteries with a 140 Ah capacity began in late 2025. These batteries will supply next-generation models from BMW’s Mini sub-brand. Mass deliveries are slated for 2027.
At the 2025 World Power Battery Conference, Dongfeng Motor also announced plans to mass-produce solid-state batteries with a 350 Wh/kg energy density starting September 2026. These batteries promise integration into vehicles offering a remarkable driving range of 1,000 kilometers.
Svolt’s Market Presence
Founded as a spin-off from GWM in 2018, Svolt has rapidly established itself as a leading battery manufacturer in China. With battery installations reaching 2.27 GWh in October, the company holds a 2.71% share of the domestic market. This achievement places Svolt seventh among China’s top power battery producers, based on data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).
Svolt Energy continues to push the boundaries of battery technology and production capabilities. Its focus on delivering more efficient and safer energy solutions demonstrates its commitment to advancing the global EV market.
